Mr Chan was a very rich man. Although he was rich, he was greedy. He raised the rent every year. The poor farmers were very unhappy.

One day, there was a heavy rainstorm. The whole village was flooded. Mr Chan and the farmers climbed up a nearby mountain to escape the water. The farmers each brought a bag of sweet potatoes with them. Mr Chan brought a box of money and jewellery.

In the evening, the farmers ate their sweet potatoes but Mr Chan had nothing to eat. He wanted to buy some sweet potatoes from the farmers but they said, ‘No!’

Mr Chan was very disappointed. He argued with the farmers but the farmers still did not give him the sweet potatoes . Then he slept on the mountainside at night . Suddenly , he found a tree which was full of fruit . He climbed up the tree . But he fell down form the tree . He was sad . The farmers saw that , they felt sorry for him. They gave some sweet potatoes to Mr Chan. Mr Chan was happy. After the flooding was gone. Mr Chan and the farmers went back to the village happily. Finally, Mr Chan felt very sorry. He reduced the rent. He learned that money was not everything but friendship was very important.
