There are five species of rhinoceros in the world. There are white and black rhinos in Africa and both have two horns. In Asia, two species have one horn and one species has two horns.
The white rhinos are the second largest land mammal next to the elephant. They weight from 340kg to 3,600kg and are 1.2m to 1.8m tall.
They are endangered species with less than 10,000 in Africa and only around 2,500 in Asia. This is because they were killed for their horn. The use of rhino horn as medicine does not threathen the species but because of making rhino horn dagger handles as symbols of weath and status in many countries.
Rhinos horns are used for defense and they have thick layered skin to protect them from sharp grasses and thorns. They have cushion legs and thick padded soles on feet to absorb shock to carry their heavy weight. They can live up to 35 years.
Note: rhinos - short form of rhinoceros
