We did not know if it was possible for human to reach the top of the world - the Mount Everest (8848m). And even using oxygen as we were, if we did get to the top, we were not at all sure whether we would not drop dead," said Edmund Hillary.
Edmund Hillary was a beekeeper in New Zealand. In 1951 and again in 1952, he joined the Everest expeditions. In 1953, the expedition reached the South Peak on May, but all of the climbers were forced to turn back at the high altitude. At last, 11:30 on the morning of 29 th May, 1953, Hillary and the Nepalese Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, were the only two of the group to reach the summit, the highest point on earth.
They had succeeded where others had failed, and had survived. This journey had taken the lives of many great explorers before them.
